Ryan holds the contest every year for its calculus and advanced-placement statistics students. Forty students participated this year.

The students worked on an engineering design project, which they presented to a review board of 60 professionals, including many practicing engineers, educators and Ryan graduates who previously competed.

The winning team members were Frank Fang, Chun Shen, Elena Varela and Brittany Worthington. They each received $150 from a fund supported by Sartomer USA, Crown Cork and Seal and private and anonymous donors.

The runners-up were Matthew Brady, Wanlu Jiang, Sarah Murray, Melissa Schweizer and Erica Suarez, who created “The Stash ‘n Dash.” They each received $125.

In addition, Brady was chosen by his peers to receive a special award for leadership and selfless service. The purpose of the container design project is to teach a method of problem-solving in an industrial environment while bringing together all academic disciplines. During the project, students were asked to put their skills to the test in the areas of time management, teamwork, diplomacy, problem-solving and real-life applications of calculus and statistics. ••
